I enjoy exploring new visual trends and experimenting with technical execution. Since product design usually concerns solving user problems with an existing set of design patterns, I needed an outlet for creative expression.
In January 2019, I onboarded a former graphic designer into the product team. She needed exposure to product design trends and lots of practice executing them. I decided to host a weekly activity for the product team, providing critique on UI polish and more.
Our team of 5 had fun exploring UI trends over a period of 12 weeks. I sent out the challenges via
Mailchimp each week.
We explored various themes such as dark mode, futuristic design, feminine vs masculine UI, and editorial-inspired designs.
Some team members had a visual in mind but lacked the know-how to execute it. I ended up giving short tutorials on how to achieve specific effects. The most popular tutorial was glowing LED, inspired by science fiction movies -- seen below.
